What is a Pick Six?

Pick Six or Pick 6 is an American (Flag) Football term.

In American Football, an offense and a defense are facing each other on the field. The offensive is trying to get to the other side of the field, into the end zone, to score a touchdown. They can throw the ball or run with the ball. The opposing defense tries to prevent the offensive from doing so. If they are successful, there is a change of possession and now the team that previously had the defensive unit on the field is allowed to send their offensive unit on the field, to try scoring.

When an offensive player isn't trying to run as far as possible with the ball, the football will be thrown through the air. This means the quarterback (the player throwing the balls) throws the ball to one of his receivers to gain as much space as possible.

PICK SIX: A pick six is one of the most exciting plays in football. If a defender intercepts the quarterback's pass, which was originally intended for the receiver, and manages to carry it to the opponent's end zone for a touchdown, then this is called a pick 6. The term Pick 6 consists of two parts. The first part, "pick," is a slang term in football that describes the interception of the ball. The term comes from "picking" the ball out of the air and stealing it from the quarterback. The number "6" indicates how many points the defender scores for his team by scoring a touchdown. In football you get six points for a touchdown. So instead of saying the defender intercepted the ball and ran it for a touchdown, it's much easier to say, "He had a pick 6."

Pick 6's don't happen often, but they are one of the best possible plays in football, because the defense scores points without having their own offense on the field. A pick six can give a team an incredible momentum and therefore it can decide an entire game.

The Mission

of Project Pick Six is to empower adolescents to intercept negative habits and influences and to support them to carry the ball in the opposite direction, for a touchdown - a life full of opportunities - and to score in life.
