Come Back Mission is a registered Nonprofit Organisation operating in the greater Eldorado Park area (Johannesburg, South Africa) for the past 17 years, given the high rate of poverty, crime and substance abuse related issues that negatively impact communities, especially the youth, Project Pick Six was initiated to address these issues. This youth development initiative aims to provide support to these adolescents and to guide them towards a positive lifestyle change as well as cultivate an enhanced outlook towards to Education. Project Pick Six is combining education with social work and sports. As part of the Project, we introduced the sport American Flag Football (a contact free version of American Football).  

The core objective of Project Pick Six is to establish a lasting support system for young individuals that extends beyond the realm of sports, encompassing holistic development with a strong emphasis on promoting the importance of education. 

At Project Pick Six, we conduct 3-4 sessions weekly, where our involvement extends beyond the field. We engage with the youth not only on the playing field but also in the classroom, assisting them in structuring their week, completing homework, preparing for exams, and providing a platform to discuss any personal challenges they may face. Additionally, we have sessions where we aim to broaden their horizons, discussing social and societal issues, and initiating initiatives where participants themselves become active in their community to address social problems.

First YAFFL Game Day

Together with Gridiron South Africa, the Association for American Football, Project Pick Six launched the Youth American Flag Football League (YAFFL). This League, which is first of its kind in Southern Africa, not only fosters healthy competition but also provides a platform for young players to showcase their skills, determination, and teamwork which is a pivotal development for the sport within the country. 

On April 27th, coinciding with Freedom Day, the inaugural YAFFL Game Day took place at Willow Crescent Secondary School in Eldorado Park.  Four teams were participating, the Harlequins, Commandos, Lions and Eagles. The Lions and the Eagles are teams of Project Pick Six.

In addition to celebrating sport, we envisioned this event as a platform to highlight social issues within our community and foster meaningful connections. Therefore, we extended invitations to various stakeholders to join us on this day, allowing them to showcase their initiatives, raise awareness about their causes, and actively engage with members of our community.

The turnout was remarkable, with 300 people coming together to share in the energy and excitement of the event. We eagerly anticipate hosting many more events like this and extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the players, coaches, supporters, and stakeholders who contributed to its success.

Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.
